CULPEPER IN RETROSPECT -- CULPEPER IN OILS

New exhibition for the Spring 2008 season features the art work of Frances Grimsley and E.Troth Lewis. Ten lovely oil paintings, featuring historic buildings and one CW battle (of Cedar Mountain) were donated by Wachovia Bank in late 2007. They also provided the Museum with a community grant of $5,000 to design and fabricate the new show, which features the artwork, objects relating to the works, and professionally designed and fabricated text and "reader-rail" graphics.

Lee Langston-Harrison, director, is a firm believer in featuring a "hands-on" interactive in all of the Museum's shows, and Retrospective is no exception. She designed an art center for kids to draw there own favorite place or building in Culpeper, and a wall on which to hang this artwork.

Visitors are thrilled with the paintings, and the exhibit, part of a two-year initiative called "Discover Your Culpeper History," is bringing more local residents to the Museum.

The show will be on view until early November, 2008.

KIDZKORNERS

Hands-on Alert!

Children of all ages are encouraged to get on the floor and play at the Museum. There are three "KidzKorners" where children can get creative.

1. Name a Dinosaur: kids can choose their FAVORITE dino and name him or her by using little plastic letters. "Fredasaurious" can then go home with your youngster. There are several resource books, crayons, markers, and stickers available for creative play time with "Cully" the Culpeper dinosaur.

2. Play with your food: learn how Native Americans processed their food using a stone mortar and grinding stone (pestle). What do we use today to process our food?

3. Playing Dress up: Dig into a period trunk and find something that fits! Kids can see how children in colonial Virginia dressed to go "a visitin'".

MORE CORNERS TO COME!
