The Chavez/Price House
809 S. West Street

The Chavez-Price residence is a late-Victorian style house built in 1910 by Nettie and James Prosser, and over the years it has been the home of several prominent Culpeper residents. After the death of Mrs. Prosser in 1912, the house was owned by James Polk Hill, a Confederate cavalryman who rode with JEB Stuart. In 1925, the house was acquired by E.O. Willis, a prominent citizen who for some years was president of the Second National Bank of Culpeper. The Willis family owned the house for 42 years, and later, the family of Julia Townsley Dodd and her husband Robert owned it for 28 years. Acquired by the current owners in 2004, the house has been lovingly restored. Beautiful hardwood floors, stained glass, a bay window, and a wrap-around porch give this house an historic charm that makes it a highlight of the holiday tour.
The Prices will display their large collection of antiques and wonderful mementos from their oversees assignments, including those from Germany, Korea, and Iraq. The Culpeper Garden Club is assisting with the decorations.
