The Swan/Huggard Home
501 S. Blue Ridge Avenue

This stately brick Colonial Revival home was built in 1906 for J. William Swan. Swan owned a John Deere dealership in Culpeper and was the first fire chief in town. Mr. Swan purchased the entire block for $600 at an auction and this was the first home built. In the 1950s Circuit Court Judge Burnett Miller, Jr. resided here.
The house features heart of pine floors, a cherry-wood library added in the 1950s, and the dining room has an oak parquet floor. There are double bay and Palladian windows on the front and sides, and the roof is traditional stamped metal. The Huggards recently added a sun porch/breakfast room. The kitchen and first floor bath have also been remodeled. An antique dental cabinet graces the front hall, and the Huggards will display their large collection of tea pots, walking canes and quilts during this year’s holiday tour.
